The regulations surrounding fisheries and aquaculture that ensure that production is carried out within legal frameworks and that sustainability can be assured.

For fisheries, management measures can affect the amount of fish that can be caught, the type of gear that can be used and where fishing is and is not allowed.

A fishing method using mechanized dredges to dig and rinse mussels and other shellfish from the bottom. Dredges are steel frames to which a net is attached. On the front of this frame, steel points are often attached that act like a kind of rake. Suction dredges suck the shell fish from the sand into the boat.

A collective name for pole lines, jigs and trolls. Jigs make use of lines with artificial bait that are moved up and down to imitate a prey.

Feature of a trawl: the distance between two wires in a triangle-shaped mesh. The mesh-size determines the size of fish caught in the net. 

A fishing technique whereby conical nets are dragged through the water column and are kept open by large square 'otter planks'.  

The migration of animals from one habitat to another habitat.

Fisheries that fish on multiple fish stocks at the same time. Often there is one target species, but several types of multiple stocks are captured simultaneously.

Marine Protected Areas are protected areas on seas, oceans, estuaries or large lakes, where application functions that have a negative impact on marine values, are restricted or prohibited. 

Marine Stewardship Council, an independent, international non-profit organization that has developed an eco-label that guarantees well-managed, sustainable fisheries. Fish products that meet the criteria of the eco-label can be identified by the blue MSC logo.

An assessment process a fishery has to get done, to obtain certification by the Marine Stewardship Council.  

Fisheries that comply with the Marine Stewardship Council assessment criteria and are certified. Fish products with the blue MSC label are caught by sustainable fisheries.

Theoretically the greatest possible 'safe' catch, in which fish populations have sufficient size to reproduce in the long term.  

Mussel larvae.

Mussel seed capture system, or 'mosselzaadvanginstallatie' in Dutch (MZI), is a specialized system used to caputre mussel seed from the watercolumn. The systems use ropes hanging in the water colum on which mussels seed attach. The ropes are attached to an anker below and floating devices above.
