Damage to the environment.

A fishing method used to harvest cockles with a type of rake. This is a labour-intensive method, widely used in the Dutch cockle fishery on the Wadden Sea.

Small, light dredges, used on board of a manual vessel. A dredge is a steel frame over which a net is attached.

A collective name for pole lines, jigs and troll lines. Hand lines and pole lines are used on a small scale most of the time and are relatively selective. unwanted by-catch have a high survival rate because they can be thrown back immediately.  

Fish or other species that are thrown overboard, so that fishermen can capture a better catch, but stay within the quota.  

A fishing method in which fish are attracted by natural or artificial bait on a hook, attached at the end of a line or transversal line. Hooks and lines are used at different depths, both in inland waters and at sea, allowing to catch fish on rough soils and shelters between rocks.  

An experimental beam trawl method in which tickler chains have been replaced by a system that creates waves in the water, causing flatfish to float to the surface.
