Shrimp

Shrimp is a type of crustaceans with elonged bodies and a primarily swimming mode of locomotion. Under the broader definition, shrimp may be synonymous with prawn. Covering the stalk-eyed swimming crustaceans with long muscular tails long whiskers and slender legs. Any small crustaceans that resemble a shrimp are called one. The habitat of the shrimp covers all waters, near the shore, rivers, lakes and in the deep sea. There are several types of shrimp on the dutch market. Wild shrimps from colder waters like the brown shrimp and the northern prawn are in general a bit smaller. Big shrimps or prawns also referred to as ‘gamba’, are most often imported from tropical areas, where they are farmed.

Giant river prawn

The giant river prawn is a fresh water prawn native to Asia and Australia. It is a large prawn that can reach up to 30 cm in length. Although these prawns live in freshwater habitats, their larvae need brackish water to survive. The giant river prawn is very territorial and can eat its own species. This causes a lot of problems when they are cultured in very high densities.

Giant river prawns are farmed in central Thailand in ponds. Little food is used in extensive pond farms. The impact of this aquaculture on the environment is lower than the aquaculture of other prawns like whiteleg shrimp and tiger prawn. The management of prawn aquaculture is only partly effective. There are also improvements needed in the area of work environment in Thai aquaculture.
