Mediterranean (FAO 37)
The availability of data of the fishery on Atlantic bonito in the Mediterranean is limited. This species is vulnerable to fishing pressureFishing pressure:
Fishing pressure is a result of the fishing effort/amount of fishing on a stock, which determines the fishing mortality. Fishing mortality is the share of the fish stock that dies annually as a result of fishing. and is often caught directly after the spawning period.
The use of purse-seinesPurse seines:
A ring net in which the net is circulated around a school of fish. Then the net is closed and taken in. This is also called 'purse seine'. has a relatively low impact on vulnerable species. However, the fishery mainly fishes on bonito that is not sexually mature, which leads to a large ecological disturbance in the Mediterranean.
The management of fisheries in the Mediterranean is complex and is done by multiple international organisations and national authorities. The multitude of management systems makes the whole of the management incoherent.
Fish in season
Fish is in season when the spawning period has ended, as the quality is then at its best.
