Atlantic salmon FAO 5, 27 Europe, Faroe Islands, Norway, cages GlobalGAP

Most salmon is cultivated on a large scale in Norway, Scotland, Ireland and the Faroe Islands. The management in Europe is well done and strict. Traceability is ensured. Despite this we cannot take away most negative effects like [eutrophication], spread of sea lice, diseases and the negative effects of escape events on the wild salmon population. There has been much research on optimizing salmon feed, which resulted in a decrease of fish oil and fish meal usage. Despite this, the content of wild fish is still relatively high. The feed of GlobalGAP certified salmon is more sustainable than the feed used in regular salmon aquaculture.
