Ponds culture occurs mostly in tropical areas. Fish and crustaceans can be farmed in ponds, with the major species being pangasius and shrimp.
Aquaculture in ponds could affect negatively the surrounding environment, because of effluents discharge and high usage of antibiotics to eliminate various diseases that can affect the farmed fish or shrimp. In addition, the construction of the ponds requires the destruction of sensitive areas, such as Mangroves.
Ponds systems are categorized into ‘intensive farming’, ‘extensive farming’, semi-intensive or zero-input.
