Several organic aquaculture certification programmes for shrimp exist, the largest organic certifier for shrimps in the german Naturland. Organic certification standards are very much alike: the feed needs to be organic and sustainable, only non-GMO organisms.
Organic shrimp farms distinguish themselves from regular shrimp farming in the use of resources. All feed input must be transparent, traceable and consist of certified organic components. Since organic farming occurs in extensive – semi-intensive ponds there are still environmental issues such as degradation of adjacent mangrove area and loss of biodiversity.
